LABC Building Excellence Awards 2025

Regional Winner – Almshouses at Trinity Hospital, Retford

Regional Winner - T.G. Sowerby Developments will be a finalist at the upcoming Grand Finals of the National LABC Building Excellence Awards

T.G. Sowerby Developments are delighted to announce that our Almshouses project at Trinity Hospital, Retford, was named as a winner in the East Midlands Regional LABC Awards, finding success in the 'Best Non-Residential New Build' category.

The project, a unique undertaking, was carried out for The Hospital of the Holy and Undivided Trinity. Established by the will of Dr John Darrel following his death in 1665 to provide 'hospitality' for sixteen poor men of Retford (and still continuing to this day), the Almshouses project represents the first expansion of its provision in its long history. Nestled within the existing grounds, the five cottages reflect the existing Trinity Hospital building, constructed in 1832 and designed by Edward Blore, architect to King William IV.

We look forward to celebrating the success of the project at the upcoming Grand Finals in London.

Director and Site Manager for the project, Chris Sowerby, said:

We are delighted to reach the National Finals once more and to showcase another outstanding project in our region. These cottages nod to the existing Trinity Hospital building, with Flemish bond brickwork, carved Ancaster stone details and a Welsh slate roof, though they also embrace the present, being highly insulated, energy-efficient and designed to cater to the changing needs of their residents. This has been a once-in-a-lifetime undertaking and we are incredibly proud of both our team and the finished project.
